Hawaii’s earthquake happened at Sunday, October 15, 2006 at 7:07:49 AM HST and measured as a “Strong” magnitude 6.6.
It was located near the island of Hawaii, the largest island in the state’s chain. Our capital of Honolulu, and the ever familiar Waikiki and Diamond Head are on the island of Oahu. The density of the State of Hawaii’s population lives on Oahu.
You can find the USGS maps of the event here for some perspective.
For television fans: ABC’s LOST, and A&E’s Dog the Bounty Hunter are shot on the island of Oahu. Most radio and television stations, also on Oahu, have been out of commission all day.
By comparison the California Northridge earthquake on January 17, 1994 at 4:30:55 am PST was a magnitude 6.7.
