33% for weather! KHON spends an average of one minute on weather per evening newscast, because the weather is the same nearly every day in Hawaii.
Minus breaks, that’s one minute out of a 22-minute news hole (5%). (There’s no question the other stations spend significantly more time — especially the “severe weather channel.”)
KHON is the only station that still gives a damn about hard news and community service.
As for the “flabby-armed reporter” comment, I suspect you’ve never held a shotgun microphone in somebody’s face for an extended period of time. That’s a great triceps workout.
Okay, I will give KHON that much. They do have the shortest weather segment of all the local news broadcasts.
Sadly, I have had the pleasure of holding a shotgun mic on a pole arm for an extended period of time, on consecutive days. Frankly, it’s a bitch and I don’t recommend it to anyone.
Come on though, you have to admit that there’s always been a hate-lothe relationship between “talent” and the production staff regardless of station/network.
Most “talent” aren’t bright enough to understand what the production staff does (or they just don’t care). I find that most reporters have a significant problem putting themselves in other people’s shoes. (But those are also the reporters who ask the toughest questions.)
The problem with some production personnel is that they get pretty comfortable with the same-old routine and take little initiative to be innovative. That’s why management feels they can be replaced by robots.
