Jerry Glanville, Rainbow Warrior Football Coach?

March 30th, 2005 · 2 Comments · News

For better or worse, it looks like former NFL coach Jerry Glanville will be the next UH Rainbow Warriors defensive coach.

Three sources close to the situation said yesterday the hiring of Glanville was a done deal, as did a report on ESPN.com. Glanville was not available for comment.

Here’s a tip for you players on the defensive end of the ball: If you don’t concentrate and focus on Jerry Glanville’s face while he’s talking, you won’t understand a word he’s saying.

Trust us on this one. It’s a scientifically proven fact.

The year is 1965, just a mere 40 years ago; I am in sophomore year of high school at Lima Central Catholic (Ohio). Our head coach Bob Williams has just introduced our new defensive coach Jerry Glanville. My first impression, and a lasting one, which he so gracefully put is that “Defense Rules.” I had the pleasure (experience of a lifetime) of being coached/ meeting a coach, much like Bo Shembeckler after at Miami of Ohio (Oxford) with my parents after my senior season who said “I am the nicest guy (coach) off the field, and the meanest son-of-a-bitch on the field. Needless to say, I believed him. Let me tell you that Jerry fit that line well, but you didn’t want to mess with him off the field either, or in the classroom for that matter as I/others found out. Needless to say my sophomore year was not fun as many of might remember. Most juniors and seniors just beat on you, or as Mr. Glanville would say “we need to toughen you up.” It worked, but I never bought into that philosophy, however his thoughts on defense, much like OSU (Go Bucks) is 100% correct. If they can’t score, they can’t beat you.

My junior year I lettered. Two incidents that year(others also) with Jerry have forever been my guide over the years. First, before jogging onto the field we had a chin-up bar for 10 reps. Mr. Glanville always watched for slackers. He called me over and said “Smith you’re the nicest guy on the field” as to which I said “Thanks, Coach” at which time he threw his hat on the ground and said “get he hell out their.” Later in the year he had seniors working me over in practice. I don’t (still) back down. John Tebben and I were going at it (again) after the whistle (blow for blow) and Jerry was blowing the whistle endlessly. He hollered and we stopped and he said “Smith, what the hell you doing?” with his back to me at which I said “Go to hell.” He came over and jerked me around by the face guard and said “Smith what did you say to me” at which I replied “Go to Hell, Sir.” I was sent to the locker room and watched the team after getting cleaned up run sprints for 30 minutes. I was happy drinking my coke. Of course I came back the next night.

My senior year I played end on defense; guard on offense; center on punts; and played on kick off and kick off receive. I always treated underclassmen with respect and saved the damage for games. It’s not often that an MVP (LINEMAN)in his senior year of high school outshines the rest of a team, but that’s another story.

He is right defense rules, but on occasion nice people in life succeed; even though the price is high I still have my dignity and self respect and have “never” backed down from unscrupulous people regardless of their title.

    OSU 27 Texas 17

PS I love “Defense” I dislike the “Prevent Defense” being used when your ahead. 3rd and 20+ only. Texas will eat you alive if you don’t play them man to man.

He’s been to the top as an NFL Coach, like my lst podition as President, only to be back where he almost started just like me. I guess he rubbed off on me. No Regrets!
