Brace yourself. We’ve got our own numbers.
4/13, 1, 40.
That’s how long we’ll have to wait for a new episode of Lost. The next episode is scheduled for April 13. One month. Fourty days from now. Our Editor got that wrong: It airs March 30.
Now for some potential spoilers:
Requisite Internet Spoiler Warning! There. You’ve been warned.
Only a handful of episodes are left and creator JJ Abrams has promised that one of the main characters dies before the end of the season.
What’s interesting about this is that two of the main characters have already “died.” Charlie nearly died at the hands of the mysterious Ethan. Shannon died in Boone’s Locke induced island hallucination, dream, or vision.
It’s generally agreed that one of the men will be offed. Had they killed Charlie early on it would have rocked everyone’s world, but we suspect there’s more for him to do so he won’t take the fall. Besides, according to the gossip rags Evangeline Lilly (Kate) and Dominic Monaghan (Charlie) are romantically linked off camera.
You might remember that Matthew Fox’s character Jack wasn’t supposed to survive episode one back when Michael Keaton was considering the role. So we’ll start there.
Jack is generally considered the main character. He has a compelling storyline that includes zombie dad and the love triangle between he, Kate, and Sawyer. Jack had his brush with death during the cave in, and Fox doesn’t have any other gigs on tap according to IMDb. We think that rules out Jack.
What of our favorite Iraqi, Sayid? Well, one of the upcoming episodes centers on Sayid, also he is a part of one of three love triangles on the island. It’s doubtful. Aside: You might have seen Naveen Andrews in a little Bollywood flick called Bride and Prejudice.
Who does this leave? Boone, Hurley, Jin, Locke, Michael, Sawyer, and Walt.
Sawyer is part of the Jack, Kate love triangle; Boone is a point of the Sayid, Shannon love triangle. We don’t see either of them dying anytime soon.
In this week’s episode we learned that Hurley cannot be killed as he’s immune to misfortune thanks to “the numbers.” Hurley was an obvious choice, but it doesn’t seem likely.
The cast thinks Daniel Dae Kim’s days are numbered as do we since minorities are the first to die in Hollywood stories. Too obvious? We agree, but Jin’s still high on the list.
According to IMDb Harold Perrineau Jr. (Michael, Walt’s Dad) is the lead in the upcoming Random Acts of Kindness, which is in production. Can he shoot a film during his Lost schedule? Can Michael build a second boat without Walt burning it down again?
Boat or no boat we don’t see anyone getting off the island soon, and Walt, the boy with “powers,” is now a proven pyro who’s got Locke as a potential father figure. Hmmm? Micheal dead? We’re really close now, but there is one remaining character.
We’ve heard the dead man is a well loved person on the island. Charlie’s testified to the fact that though the man seems crazy, John Locke saved his life. Boone got the Locke treatment too. For crying out loud, the man built a baby crib with his bare hands. Anyone who figures out that Sawyer’s dad was a feral pig is in tune with the island.
Locke, played by Terry O’Quinn, is the cornerstone of our gang of 14. Without him they are truly lost. We suspect that if Perrineau doesn’t have to leave the show to do his film, Locke will die in the act of saving someone from peril. After all, O’Quinn’s Special Director Kendall role on Alias is ripe for a resurrection.
Even if he died, don’t you think Locke would stick around to watch over the remaining castaways?

I guess viewers get a 40 day wait as punishment for Hawaii denying them a tax credit. Heh.
