A regular reader writes: “Do you watch 60 Minutes? Andy’s knockin’ Hawaii again. Remember when his daughter was on vacation in Hawaii and got her stuff stolen from a scenic lookout?”
One of the interesting things about all this is that people who live where there’s a lot of bad weather, ice and snow, seem to get more done than people who live where it’s sunny and warm all day.
Hawaii is a great state for a vacation — really lovely. But I don’t think people who live in Hawaii do as much work as the people do who live in Alaska, Maine or North Dakota.
Looks like payback from the Rooney clan, although maybe Andy’s been talking to Hawaii’s most popular public figure, Evan Dobelle lately.
Besides, we happen to know for a fact that North Dakota is the laziest state in the union.

I don’t think Mr. Rooney is knocking us, I think he’s just pointing out that people living in states with nice weather are more apt to go outside and enjoy themselves rather than stay inside and work as the people living in snowbound states are forced to do. I bet people living in freezing weather everywhere would like to have that option of skipping work and heading outside.

I moved to Hawaii from San Diego California, a mainland spot with nice weather, and there is somewhat of a truth to not accomplishing as much work when the weather is nice outside. Just look at how many corporate facilities there are in places like Arizona. I mean Arizona. Why the hell would anybody want to live there? There is nothing to do but work.
Hawaii does have a bit of what could be seen as laziness to it though. My impression is that people in Hawaii tend to be more complacent. They appear to be happy with the way things are, so they see no need to strive to do any better. Have food, have surf, have family, have no problems.
