Timmy Chang Becomes a Man

September 10th, 2004 · No Comments · News

Hawaii QB Timmy ChangA comment posted by “Ikaika” raised an interesting question at this morning’s coffee time. Interesting because it almost started a fist fight between the old guys sitting around us at the McDonalds.

With the first of many losses under our belts, why is it that this season is now the season for Timmy (or shall I call him Tim?) to break the passing record? Never mind actually concentrating on the team. To this I don’t blame Tim himself, the media really stinks on this one.

Hawaii still hates BYU and would like nothing better than seeing record-holding BYU QB Ty Detmer start spinning in his grave so UH will hype this season like no other. (What? Mr. Detmer alive?) Our focus though is on the kid himself, as in this passage from the athletic department press release:

Warrior quarterback Timmy Chang completed 38-of-66 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Michael Brewster added two rushing scores.

Mr. Chang is mentioned throughout the Hawaii Athletics site as Timmy Chang, though throughout Saturday’s broadcast unabashed-homer play-by-play man Jim Leahey referred to Hawaii’s QB as “Tim” Chang. We kept asking ourselves: Who is this Tim? Where is Timmy Chang, UH quarterback?

Perhaps a Leahey could chime in and drop the information bomb on us. Either Timmy Chang hit puberty and became a man or there’s a strange Leahey semantic at work. If it’s the latter we look forward to hearing more about running back “Mattie” Faga and backup QB “Jackie” Rolovich. Go Bows!
