The UH Sword Swallowers: Part One

August 27th, 2004 · 4 Comments · News

*The first in an series of articles regarding important UH things that don’t really matter.*

In an age where the best way to deal with your problems is to ignore them (read: [Evan Dobelle](http://talkstink.com/archives/category/locals/being-evan-dobelle/) fallout), UH Football coach June Jones and KHON’s resident [MAW](http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=MAW&defid=763470) Joe “I love free candy” Moore supplied the university’s PR folks a day off.

This latest non-controversy began Wednesday night when Mr. Moore teed off on sports anchor John Veneri’s piece regarding the UH Sport press release entitled [Warrior Game Experience To Be Enhanced By The Music Of Mike Post Productions](http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/pr.html?prid=13091&p=100).

This tale begins one fine day in Scotland. Composer Mike Post was golfing with the coach when, clearly out of touch with reality, he asked “Why do all football games sound the same?”

***The Fabulous Mr. Jones***

We imagine this was just the oil that was needed to kick start the gears in Jones’ head. Still smarting from all the grade school teasing about his manhood, Jones realized this was another chance to “butch up” his manly charges. (Like it didn’t happen? The guy’s name is June for crying out loud!)

Old UH LogoThose who aren’t familiar with UH football might not remember the old UH logo: The Rainbow. One glance at the image and you knew it was the University of Hawaii logo. One might even say to clueless administrators and marketing geniuses that it was… a brand name!

That is until someone reminded Jones that the rainbow is also the unofficial color scheme for gay pride. Well, football is the least gayest sport of all sports. Huge sweaty dudes in tights wrapping their muscular arms around each other, piling on one another, and slapping each other’s behinds — not gay!

So out with the Rainbows and in with the Warriors. Green was removed as the jersey’s main color scheme and replaced with the less fruity black. Yes, June had solidified his turgid standing as head football coach and could now walk the sidelines proudly erect.

There is no way that logo, were it never seen before, gets public or administrative approval if it’s lumped in with the others that didn’t make the cut. I never realized how lame that logo as until I saw it here, just now.

It is OK as a Manoa sports logo but hello, they were looking for a SYSTEM logo and the Hilo Vulcans aint feeling being Bows all of a suddenly, either, or so I’m told

But I think Rainbow Warriors is a bad-ass name… too bad one guy has so much clout (and insecurity, apparently)… now it’s like 5 different names of sports teams at Manoa… boooo!

We forgot to mention another “not gay” part of football: Quarterbacks cup their hands against their center’s crotch to receive the football.

…and then they lick their fingers.
